The St. John River is an obvious focal point for Fredericton, but what is really wonderful is how accessible it is. You can walk along the river on both sides where it passes through the city. Even better, take a bike and explore the trails between Island View and Lincoln on the south side and take the walking-bridge trail on the north side. As the seasons change, you are greeted by emerging leaves, early wildflowers, fields of lupins, sun-soaked grasses, or brilliant autumn foliage. The scale of this place makes it a joy to get around, either on foot or on two wheels.

Our Riverfront Capital is rich in heritage, culture and natural beauty. Once a British Garrison, now tree-lined avenues lead to 70 km (43 mi.) of riverside trails connecting historic and cultural sites like the Historic Garrison District, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and Old Government House.

A bust of Lord Beaverbrook sits prominently in the square on the Newcastle side of the City. It reads, “Great Achiever – Great Benefactor – Miramichi.” His love is evident, his ashes having been interred facing the river, September 25, 1964. Max Aitken grew up in Newcastle, and upon accepting his peerage, his name choice was “Lord Beaverbrook” in reference to a nearby community, after considering the more difficult to pronounce “Lord Miramichi.” He kept his Miramichi “drawl” over the years. Beaverbrook House is open for visitors.

Situated along the world-famous salmon-angling river, best moments in Miramichi include touring the historic houses, cycling the spectacular 88-km (55-mi.) Miramichi River Trail, joining a foot-stomping kitchen party, and experiencing a Mi’kmaq powwow.

On the corner of Church and Queen Streets in downtown Moncton there is a moment when even the casual traveller can reach out and touch the soul of the city. For it is in this place that one can see in close proximity, on three corners, three similar late Gothic-Revival churches, all built within 20 years of each other (1915-1935). Looking at these splendid architectural structures, we can appreciate a time before the homogenization of buildings. We can also comprehend that there was then in Moncton, as now, a common understanding of what is valuable and beautiful.

Moncton is not only an easy drive to nine of New Brunswick’s top destinations (including the awe-inspiring Bay of Fundy), it takes only a few minutes to walk from downtown bars, bistros, shops and hotels to a vast expanse of flora and fauna along the Trans-Canada Trail.
